Heterotopic bone formation in abdominal surgical scar

Abstract
Heterotopic bone formation or myositis ossificans traumatica is a well recognized, but uncommon sequele of abdominal surgical incisions. There was only a report with two instances of heterotopic bone formation in abdominal scars in Korean literatures until this time.
The cause of -bone formation in abdominal scars is not known, but two major theories are currently accepted; the first is transposition of periosteal or perichondrial cells into the wound, the second theory is metaplasia of multipotent embryonic connective tissue cells. The symptoms are usually those resulting from the presence of a hard bone in a normally soft structure.
Surgery is treatment of choice for patients who have symptoms. The author experienced a case of heterotopic bone formation in abdominal scars in 59 years old male patient who has been underwent operation for leiomyoma of upper jejunum at 7 month ago.
